"Writing isn't about making money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid, or making friends....It's about getting up, getting well, and getting over. Getting happy, okay? Getting happy."
--Stephen King

"If writing fiction is dessert, then copy-editing is eating all your vegetables. Blogging is snacking between meals."
--Neil Gaiman

"Beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression....the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow; quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you it will."
--Yoda

"Who in their right mind in a choice between pancakes and living chooses pancakes?"
"Harold, if you’d pause to think I believe you'd realize that that answer’s inextricably contingent upon the type of life being led and, of course, the quality of the pancakes."
--Stranger Than Fiction

"I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity."

"There is no such thing as a moral or immoral book.
Books are well written, or badly written. That is all."

"And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it."
--Roald Dahl

"My mind is set on overdrive
The clock is laughing in my face
A crooked spine
My sense's dulled
Passed the point of delerium
On my own; here we go"
--Green Day

"Then when you wake up one day about 40 years old, you say, “My god, I’ve arrived. I’m there.” And you don’t feel very different from what you always felt. And there’s a slight letdown because you feel it was a hoax. And there WAS a hoax. A dreadful hoax. They made you miss everything. And we thought of life by analogy with a journey, with a pilgrimage, which had a serious purpose at the end, and the thing was to get to that end. Success, or whatever it is, or maybe heaven, after you’re dead.

But we missed the point the whole way along. It was a musical thing, and you were supposed to sing, or to dance, while the music was being played."
--Alan Watts

Hi. I'm Karen. I'm a recent college grad with a Summa cum Laude BS degree in Technical Writing and two years of copy editing experience for my school newspaper. I work for the Martinsville Bulletin, a daily for a small town in Virginia, as a copy editor, designer, and reporter. I'm multi-talented.

During school, I had no life, and now that school is over, I'm going to continue this proud tradition of not having a life. I read; I write; I occasionally watch "House" and movies. That's the extent of my involvement in my life. Just say no to socializing, kids. Other people are often boring and hard to understand. Just avoid them.

I love books. I love the way they look on my shelf or stacked on my desk or nightstand. I love their weight and the way they fit in my hands; my small fingers and palms mold easily to any shape and sized book. I love glossy, colorful covers and those minute, sometimes funny condensed summaries on the back flaps. I love the rough pages under my fingers, the shining, precise black letters, even the smell of the glue and the paper. I even love author photos and bios. I hoard my books and have several full bookcases. I sometimes borrow from the library, but I prefer to own my books just because they're so beautiful, although I never write in them or dogear pages. (I have a tidy collection of bookmarks and always keep them handy.) Likewise, I love to read and can always be found with a stack of novels on my nightstand. I don't usually watch TV (with one exception) but I do like to watch movies, although the theater is getting a little too pricey for me. But my real love is and always has been the book. And I often can't accept that fictional characters aren't real.

Case in point: Sherlock Holmes. He is my literary hubby, even if he's not interested in dating.

You can tell everything about me from the characters I love, btw. I'm an open book like that. Ha ha, puns, they suck.

I also write books. My genre is dark supernatural fiction; I like to read other things, but no romance or non-fiction, please. Recs welcome. My favorite archetypes are the intelligent, sarcastic, crafty human villain and the deeply flawed with a tragic past and probably some sort of crippling drug addiction hero. Favorite themes include your basic good vs. evil conflict, questions of identity, insanity vs. reality, mental illness, and the search for God/meaning. I do not like happy endings. I do not like forced romances between the hero and any female character within a twenty mile radius. And most of all, I don't use my writing as a platform for any political or religious agenda whatsoever. I just write to entertain, period.
